Am I taking too many vitamins?
I recently went to my doctor and was diagnosed with blood pressure and high/bad cholesterol levels. He also advised me that if I didn’t do anything about it, my heart would severely get worse. Now I know what you must be thinking…"Some fat guy with a poor diet and exercises very little, if any at all." This could not be farther from the truth. I am barley in my 30’s, 74" tall, and weigh 210 pounds. My doctor prescribed medication for both the blood pressure and cholesterol; however he told me that it was ok to take OTC vitamins to help.
My question to you all is this: "Am I taking too much of the vitamins below?" This is what I am currently taking:
Morning time / 6:00am
Fish Oil 2400 mg
Vitamin D 1000 i.u.
Super B-Complex (1 tablet)
Night time / 6:00pm
Fish Oil 2400 mg
Vitamin D 1000 i.u.
Super B-Complex (1 tablet)
"One a day" Men’s Health Formula, vitamin (1 tablet)
I am currently pondering the idea of adding a low dose of Niacin into the regiment. Maybe 100mg a day and night…that is if I can withstand the flush effect.
Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.
As for my diet…
All I drinnk is water, belive it or not. Given my work schedule it is hard to eat the normal 3 meals a day. Sometime I work from 5am till 6pm, and others I work from 5pm till 6am. I eat alot of cereal (Basic 4, Honey Bunch Oats, Cheerios, etc.) I try to limit my red meat intake and eat alot of chicken. I don’t eat fatty or fried foods. I don’t eat the proper amounts of anything in the food pyramid, but I do limit all the "bad" things I should not be eatting.

Filed under: how to lower blood pressure
There are a lot of important issues in your question.
First, take your supplements with meals. The fat soluble items will be better absorbed when taken with a meal.
Next, mineral deficiencies are quite common. So, it might be wise to take a quality multi-mineral supplement.
Next, EXERCISE is important, so be sure you are getting the right kind, in the right amounts.
Finally, DIET is the most important aspect in all of this, yet you and your doctor have said nothing about what you actually eat. Are you eating the recommended 5 to 9 servings of fresh fruits and vegetables daily? 3 servings of "real" whole grains? 1 to 2 servings of tree nuts? Olive oil? Cod liver oil (a supplement that can replace your Vitamin D and some of your fish oil supplements)? 2 servings of fresh, deep-water ocean fish each week? Are you AVOIDING trans fats? fast foods? processed foods? junk foods?
Best wishes and good luck.
too much. just take a multi with iron. cut the fish oil in half.

"Your cholesterol may rise to a higher level without enough zinc in your body. zinc is needed for the body to be able to grow properly, so be sure your children get enough zinc as well. Apparently if there is zinc deficiency in the body, one part of the body may become depleted of its zinc supply to help another part of the body. It’s not a good idea for the brain not to have enough of this mineral. That could lead to learning problems while children are growing up. Zinc deficiency also seems to be linked to high blood pressure, so don’t leave out this valuable mineral from your diet."
Please read the above link buddy …… the simple fact that you mention that your intake of cereals is high leads me to believe that your high cholesterol and high blood pressure may be due to a simple zinc deficiency ……phyates, compounds found in grains and legumes, bind with zinc so that it cannot be absorbed.
Foods rich in zinc are lean red meat, seafood (especially oysters), wheat germ, pumpkin seeds, eggs and ground mustard.
As for the supplements I am a firm believer in supplementing only with wholefood supplements if you can afford or getting your nutrition from the fresh organic source (if you can afford it)…. or just eating plain old fresh unprocessed food.
The fillers, flavoring, preservatives and other nastychemicals contained in a lot of health supplements and powders are questionable to say the least…. magnesium stearate springs to mind and is said to alter cell DNA and depress immunity…. read the labels on the supplements you are taking and google the meanings of the words in the ingredient list you dont understand so that you know precisely what you are ingesting.

I agreed to both Doctor J and Minx. Good thing, you are drinking water to hydrate your body cells, but at least 8 glasses per day. This is one very basic action to detox impurities from your body. A good multi vitamins and minerals can be sufficient, as well as sleeping well at night which can keep your blood pressure normal, not forgetting some exercise to sweat out. Bless you.
Take niacin and L- arginine would not hurt you and would bring down your blood pressure. I take SO much more vitamins than you do. You really need to add some fruit into your diet instead of so much cereal as there is a lot of sugar and sodium hidden in that stuff. Add a bit of vegies and you should be fine.
