Quitting smoking is easy, it is the staying quit that is hard.
The craving for a cig lasts about three minutes so if he can stay quit for about three minutes each time he craves a smoke, then he can get through the first three days.
The first three days is the time when his body is going though withdrawl from the poisons from the cigs. During these three days, he should drink at least 10-8oz glasses of water a day. The oral craving can be stemmed by drink this water from a sports top bottle. Everytime he craves the cig, he should suck some water from the bottle.
The next ten days is the easiest time to return to smoking because all the "triggers" are still making him want to smoke.
I smoked for about 3 years total, I am 45 and glad I don’t still do that nasty habit. My "triggers" were, coffee in the morning, talking on the phone, driving, playing pool or being at a bar and most important;being around smokers.
What I did to trick my mind into being ok when the triggers nagged me to smoke was I walked in the morning instead of drinking coffee, the exercise woke me up. I doodled when talking on the phone and I sang while driving and I stopped going to the bars (I don’t drink by the way) except to play in my pool league and then I would munch on carrots, celery and other veggies I would buy in snack packs from the produce section of my store.
In other words, I kept my hands and mind busy. Eventually, the mental craving for the "hand to mouth" activity went away.
Learning is a form of brain washing. Teaching yourself to smoke during certain situations needs to be retaught for good behavior.
Good Luck to both of you.
I know exactly how you feel but only he can do it. Its switch in his brain that only he has access to and all you can do is give him your support as he tries. Good luck to all three of you
There is nothing you can do to get him to stop smoking. He has to want to stop smoking. My husband has been trying to get me to stop smoking forever and I never listened. I just finally decided myself I wanted to quit and I did 4 weeks ago.
give him gum… something to keep him busy when he has a nikkie fit! I just went out and bought my honey some patches and they are helping, I would agree though you have to want to quit! I just quit yesterday… and Im doing okay, but I quit for myself, my daughter, my boyfriend and my expected baby! he may need a motivator to get him to quit! Also I heard that sun flower seeds help a ton!!! good luck!
Reading your previous questions, maybe he would be less stressed if the neighbor dogs were gone. Wait until they are gone all day. I remembered I have room in a fridge/freezer in my shop.
