I have a few questions about being induced.?
Ok, just trying to give some background. So I’m 38.5 weeks pregnant and being induced on Monday, I’ll be 39 weeks then. I have been having A LOT of swelling ( the kind where even my toes get huge!). Today when I went into the doc’s they took my blood pressure 3x (because they couldn’t believe how high it was) and I have increased blood pressure now. The doctor said the baby is big and not much fluid for him, which could be causing him stress. I am getting a ultrasound tomorrow to get the about weight and to see if the baby is breech. He told me if the baby is under 9lbs and 4oz and is not breech I will not have to have a C section.
Ok so what I am wondering if anyone could help is
What exactly happens during an induction
What was you experience with it if you had one
How long were you in labor
Would you rather of had a C section
What do I need to bring to the hospital for the baby
What do I need for myself
Will they give me anything for the baby? I’ve heard that they give you some formula and diapers and bottles.
Anything else you would like to share would be GREAT! Thanks for your help!

When you are induced. You will go to the hospital be placed in a gown and you will have I.V.’s placed in your wrist/arm. The Doctor will come in when he/she is ready to begin the procedure, and than place a tiny pill on your cervix that doesn’t hurt and you won’t feel the pill. They will more than likely start you on something called pitocin to get you into active labor. Pitocin is given to you by I.V. Once you begin active labor you will either dilate to 10 cm or you won’t. If you do not dilate to 10 cm and their is no progress at all or the baby is in danger you will automaticaly have an emergency C section. I never had a C section so I couldn’t tell you what you will go through. On the contrary you may want to bring a newborn outfit for the baby to take pictures in and to bring baby home in. You will want to bring yourself some sweats and a comfy/roomy shirt & a stretchy shirt. If you have a C section, you will want to wear a roomy shirt to not press against the incision area as I imagine it will be majorly sore. If you don’t have a C section you may want to wear a stretchy shirt to help give your new tummy some support. You will want to bring pads, you may not like the pads the hospital provides, and some comfy granny panties. You should be provided with some nice hospital gifts, diapers, wipes, pacifier. If you plan on breast feeding, you will want to buy some breast pads, as to not leak on your shirt. Make sure you wear your hair back, before you are induced, because you can get overheated and sweaty during labor., also bring a nursing bra if you are planning on nursing, Don’t bring anything to clingy for the baby, they will have an umbilical stump and you don’t want it to be irritated by a clingy outfit.
I was induced and passed my due date, everything went like a charm. I have had friends induced early and some induced late and not have everything work like a charm.
I’ve been induced twice and with my 2nd, the medicine they gave me to cause contrations wasn’t working for me so they had to break my water.
i was induced at 38 weeks .
I went in on monday evening ( 5pm ). Had a gel put on my cervix to soften it at 6pm .
That started mild contractions . they stopped at about 1030 that night , so at midnight i had some more gel put on . Some more contractions , nothing major .
6am tuesday the doctor came in and broke my water – If they are going to break ur water , ask for a few mins to prepare yaself .. the contractions come hard and fast after this is done .
I then got a drip with some drug in it to bring on more contractions aswell .
By 9 am i was in serious pain and almost passing out from no sleep .
Had epidural at 11am . soooo awsome !! lol
more contractions , more walking , etc etc .
at 1030 tuesday night i was told i would need to start pushing soon .
at 1145 my son was born .
All inductions can be different , just depends on what ur doctor wants to do , But the nurses and ur doctor should explain it all before it starts.
Pack a few pairs of PJs and ALOT of underwear and maternity pads. One or 2 pairs of clothes, shoes to wear in the shower .Chocolate is a must .
At the hospital i went to they gave each baby a small pack of diapers , some cream for rash. call the hospital and ask them , every place is different !
If ur bottle feeding they will tell you to bring all ur own stuff in .
I breastfed , but my milk didnt come in till day 6 ( i was still in the hospital at this time ) so the midwives offered a bottle and formula for my use , they arnt going to let ur baby starve !
If u have a c section , u will be in hospital a bit long then a vaginal birth.
the one thing i didt bring but wish i did – toilet paper . the stuff at the hospital was one ply and so rough , no one wants that on their hoo harr after giving birth – go out and find the best / softest / silkiest toilet paper you can afford , its worth it .
they usualy dress the baby in a shirt or dress , they are fine to stay in that , but u will probably want to put thm in their own clothes .
If you dont have any one that will be able to bring in extra things for you and the baby , then pack everything , or atlest one of everything ( they usually have a sink for hand washing and stuff )
Okay first off to induce you they will squirt some gel into your vagina to get contractions started, you should have no more then 3 lots of gels at 8 hour intervals (If your labour goes that long)
My experience would be different from yours because my babies back was facing my back which meant his head was not hitting the right spot to start contractions eventhighgh my waters broke. I was in active labour for 22 hours but the whole thing from when my water broke, etc went for 48. No I would not have rathered a C section although of course I would have if it was necessary.
What to bring to hospital
Maternity pads ( you will bleed after, heavier then a period)
Undies and maternity bras for three to four days
PJs for four to three days
Shampoo conditioner and body wash
make up and cosmetics
toothbrush and toothpaste
Change of clothes for when you go home!
If you plan to breastfeed take breastpads
Baby
Nappies and baby wipes
nappy rash cream
about six jumpsuits
singlets
beanies and newborn mittens to stop the baby scratching him/herself
hospital should supply towels, blankets, bottles, baby wash, baby cream etc but I would take the brand of formula you want to use if you dont want to breastfeed:) good luck!!
