Not really and it’s not as simple as that either. Single readings are never diagnostic, I hope the assumption that she has high blood pressure wasn’t just based on a single reading? Multiple readings are needed to diagnose to reduce the "white coat effect". Ambulatory BP reading is the best way to go.
It’s important that secondary causes for hypertension, such as hormone or kidney problems, are excluded first.
We always advice lifestyle changes and sometimes it is enough to help. Your girlfriend needs to lose weight if overweight, reducing sodium in the diet may help (evidence is shaky), exercise, stop smoking if she smokes and reduce alcohol intake. If none of that works and BP remains high, anti-hypertensive therapy is the best way to go. The higher the BP the greater the risk to health. Is she taking the combined Pill? That might be the problem. How old is she? Does she have any other medical problems?
Tell her to see a doctor to ensure it’s not an indicator of something more serious.
You can control high blood pressure (to a point) with exercise, diet, weight loss and cutting out smoking and drinking. In more severe cases she may need medication.
She should be talking this through with her doctor as it may be possible to avoid medication altogether.
If its just once, it could be chaulked up to "white coat syndrome" (being nervous about being at the doctors) or a handful of other situational factors. They should take a look at previous history to see if its a pattern, and keep an eye on it to see it becomes a pattern.
There is no harm in coughing up 20 bucks for a blood pressure cuff (the old fashioned kind, with a stethoscope) to keep an eye on it….after all, its not called a silent killer without reason.
Anyhow, yeah, she should speak to a doctor about it – not every case of high blood pressure is due to being over weight and out of shape….there are young skinny people like me who have it, and she needs to have other causal factors ruled out….
Because otherwise, you can try everything under the sun, and it still wont help…..I know, I’ve been there.
But if diet and excercise can help – her doctor will tell her so, and I’ll be happy to endorse the American Heart Associations website as having some excellent suggestions for both diet, and excercsie – same too with the American Diabetes Foundation.
Watch your sodium intake, if you smoke stop ( I haven’t been able to quit ), exercise, if overweight lose a few pounds and my Dr constantly tells me " avoid as much stress as possible~
Hi
Is it the first time she was told that she has high BP (blood pressure)
The BP must be taken several times with sometime intervals in-between (days/weeks) before she could be diagnosed with hypertension.
Does her family have any history? If yes then there could be a chance. And vice versa. But still several checks should be made before you conclude.
Sometime the BP gets high when patients are infront of doctors. It’s called the white coat condition where the patients BP jumps high when they see the doctor
Stress, some disease, medications, could be the reason.
Try to check several times with the advise of a general physician to make sure
I hope it would not be a problem )))
Good luck
your concern for her displays your love towards her. She is fortunate 2 have you beside her =).Now as regards the blood pressure issue. . .it is nothing to be taken lightly. If it is not kept under control for what ever reasons, she can have a stroke. When the pressure remains high in our blood vessels over time the walls of these vessels will weaken until at some point it bursts and they stroke out. Also over the years when the blood vessels are under continuous pressure it causes problems with all of the other organs in the body..it’s kinda like if you had a water hose and you put your thumb over the opening and only a small forceful amount comes out..well that’s exactly how the blood supply to ..the heart..the kidneys..the liver and all of the other organs are affected. Over time people suffer from kidney loss and end up on dialysis..liver failure from lack of blood supply to the liver..and when it happens to the heart..the pipes(blood vessels)going into and exiting the heart..are clamped down tight thus the heart must work extra hard to pump the blood through the narrow openings..the heart like any other muscle eventually gets stretched and becomes enlarged. When the heart becomes like this..it renders it an ineffective pump and once again blood supply to the rest of the body is decreased and eventually loss of function to these organs will occur.
Keep the pressure under control..diet, alleviate stress, don’t smoke, and if that’s not working she must find a good alternative option or take medication prescribed by her physician. Take care & stay well. Our creator has big plan for the both of you.k
O one last thing..most times when someone is in a doctors office and the nurse takes the blood pressure..it’s always a high reading the first time..the cuff is tight… the person is nervous ..so could be a false high reading..but they will recheck it and monitor her. You can drive into any fire department and ask if someone can check your blood pressure. those guys just sit around waiting for an alarm to go off..and they dont mind at all. =)
A healthy, well-balanced, low fat diet is extremely important for hypertension patients. Fresh fruits and vegetables are a must ( garlic should be included ) as the potassium present in them counters the effect of salt taken which in turn is a blood pressure increasing agent. Kidney patients, though, should keep a watch over their potassium intake. This diet of fruits and vegetables will also provide you with anti-oxidants, so very important for your general well being. This diet gets rid of the toxins in the body as well.
Natural diuretics (diuretics are drugs that remove water and salt from the body) like coconut water, buttermilk, coriander juice, coffee, tea, parsley and specifically dandelion leaves may be taken in moderate quantities to lower the blood pressure. Consuming caffeine in the form of coffee, tea etc. is slightly controversial as doctors usually recommend cutting down on them or even totally eliminating them, but some studies suggest that long term moderate use of them, specifically coffee, actually brings down the BP.
Then there are a number of herbal and homeopathic remedies that are well known for their ability to control high blood pressure with great success. Unlike conventional medicines, which do not always address the root cause, natural remedies can do this without the risk of side effects or addiction.
In keeping with a holistic approach to health, Naturopaths recognize that high blood pressure may be a sign or symptom of imbalance in the body and thus recommend a combination of lifestyle changes and natural remedies to remove the causes of the high blood pressure, rather than simply just treating the symptoms.
Remember to always source your natural remedies from a reputable company in order to ensure safety, efficacy, and correct therapeutic dosage.
