Question about coming off blood pressure meds?
Hi, I just lost 80lbs with eating healthy and exercising. I was taking hydrochlorothiazide and lisinopril for high blood pressure and just went off both meds a week ago b/c I wanted to see if I cured myself. Well, my blood pressure is good!
but I’ve gained 7lbs in one week!! Is that normal? Is it just water? And if it is, will it go away eventually?
my BP was 117/71 this morning. yesterday it was 115/82

Your excess weight was the cause of your hypertension. I guess it was not essential hypertension (no known cause). You can stop your medication and only think about starting again if it is consistently high. That is the criteria that your doctor would have used in the first place. Maybe 5 readings (in the office) over 3 to 6 months. Don’t sweat high blood pressure. If excess weight caused your hypertension, did taking a drug cause you to lose weight? Of course not. If you get uncomfortable with your readings, try taking magnesium oxide. It dropped my bp better than two prescription drugs.
Congratulations and keep up the good work
I did the same thing and had to get back on my meds. Ask your doctor.
But what was your blood pressure? Does your Dr.. know you stopped your medications? Normal is about 120/80 and pre-hypertensive is about 140/90. Good for you in losing 80 lbs.
As always it is not good to go off of medication without a doctor’s recommendation. But I’m exstatic to learn you lost so much weight, way to go! However, it is good you kept an eye on your blood pressure. If I were you, I’d call the doctor’s office Monday and see what to do next and if you need to be seen to be re-evaluated. They may decide just to keep periodic watch on b/p and your weight and give you additional recommendations, which would be healther overall then just guessing what to do next. Good luck!
I’ve gone off my meds a few times and every time, things go well for a week or two, and then my BP goes thru the roof, like 200/100 or abouts. I keep reading here, hoping somebody will come up with an answer.
BP medications have to be tapered slowly, only under medical supervision. Otherwise a rebound is likely.
