For an actual diagnosis of hypertension, you have to have two separate readings (on two separate occasions) that are over 140/90. This is stage 1 hypertension.
If you have two readings above 160/90, this is stage 2 hypertension. Or if you have two readings between 120/80 and 140/90, it’s pre-hypertension.
There are many different treatments for hypertension. Following a healthy diet and regular exercise regimen are the first steps toward achieving a healthy blood pressure. If this fails, we will add on one or two drugs, which may come from a variety of drug classes.
If no other co-morbid conditions exist (CVD, diabetes, the list goes on) we will use a thiazide diuretic (such as hydrochlorothiazide or HCTZ) as our first choice.
