I am a 16 year old former high school athlete and I have had to drop off of my school Track and Cross Country team due to a persistent leg condition that I have been suffering from. This problem arose during the Fall/Winter of 2009, during my sophomore year. One day while performing a quadricep excercise called "Wall Sits", I experienced an abnormally large amount of pain, followed by violent shaking of the legs until eventually I collapsed on the floor. I informed my coach of the incident and was instructed go for a short run afterwards (about 1/4 mile). I remember barely being able to even jog the distance due to a severe fatigued feeling in my legs. I tried to attend a few more practices, but upon seeing my poor performance, and hearing my constant complaints, my coach told me to take a break. Adults all around me, including him, said that they were likely nothing more than growing pains. At the time, the idea didn’t seem so absurd, so I went for weeks even months before I really pushed my mother to take me to my doctor, all the time having to deal with this "limitation." My legs (quadriceps and calves) began to feel fatigued extremely rapidly compared to even most average people. I was a rather skinny teenager at that time, and frequently ran upwards of 6 miles a day in Cross Country practice, but my legs seemed to be in even worse condition than before I had begun to run Track. Keep in mind that throughout my life I have always been active, involved in many sports and have never had problems with my legs. I eventually saw my doctor, who suggested that I take anti-inflammatory medication. After this failed, a whole fiasco of referrals and tests unraveled. I was given blood work, to test for any chemical imbalances in my body, the results came back just fine. I was sent out to an orthopedist who gave me x-rays and a bone density scan. He ultimately ruled out any structural defects and declared that there were no problems with my bones or joints. I was recommended to a neurologist, who tested my blood while I was at rest, then instructed me to perform "wall sits" and took my blood once more after I felt the pain. Her results did not indicate any problems. I was recommended to a vascular doctor, who did not say much to me directly, but i did over hear him tell his assistant that I lost my "AT pulse" when I flexed my calf muscle. He gave me a referral for a CT scan, which showed no problems. I was also given a sonogram of my legs, once while I was resting, and another time immediately after being asked to perform "wall sits." I was also strapped with a series of inflatable cuffs hooked up to a machine (similar to those used to guage blood pressure), which I believe were supposed to monitor bloodflow through my legs. Both were inconclusive. I am open to suggestions. I did try refraining from all intense physical activity for almost a month at one point, but as I have grown more and more hopeless about curing this "limitation" I have grown accustom to accepting the "limitation" as part of my daily life. I do play sports and continue to be active on a slight to moderate level, but after sustained continous activity, my legs will begin to pain me, and eventually if I am playing a game such as basketball, i must take slight breaks from constant running throughout the game. When I do stop what I am doing the pain quickly vanishes and I don’t even notice much wrong with my legs. I know that if I am going to a party, in which I will be dancing all night, or taking a paintballing trip, I should not plan to not do any strenous actviity during the days preceeding it. The pain and fatigued feeling will quickly emerge with any heavy activity (leg excercises, running, sports, etc.) that make use of my calfs and quadriceps or even prolonged minor activites (jogging, standing on one leg, etc. ) targetting my legs, however it seems to appear more rapidly and dramatically, if I was doing making heavy use of my legs prior to that activity. As I mentioned, it quickly reduces as soon as I quit the activity, however after very strenuous activity, I might find standing or other even basic activities slightly uncomfortable. Keep in mind that the things that I consider strenous might not be considered very strenous for the average healthy human being, especially a male teenager. I still continue to excercise my upper body with weights, and am rather healthy. I have a family history of bone and joint problems descending from one side, but on the other, it appears that my family has had some leg problems. My cousin who is a year older than me, claims to have the same symptoms, and my father was diagnosed with Venous Reflux Disease. I have tried to search all over for answers to this problem, but if you have had similar experiences or have any sort of knowledge that might help me, it would be absolutely appreciated. If you have any further questions about my

had plus 2 portein in my urine yesterday at my appt. and also gained 4 pounds in 4 days. I had to go back today for blood work and when tey retook my blood pressure it was 148/104…. I’ve been having headaches, seeing spots, dizzy etc. ALL of which I told my doctor about…. his remedy was to tell me to go home and rest (which BEFORE I had my appt today I took a 3 hour nap… woke up at 2:30pm and left for my appt. at 2:40pm) I figured since I was napping my blood pressure would be down. I’m waiting on a call back from my doctor, but has this happened to anyone else? What would you all suggest?
Like I said… I AM waiting on a return call from my doctor!
that’s plus 2 protein* in my urine… sorry

My 10 year old cat came down with an acute asthma attack last year and was successfully treated. Again, this spring that cough came back, so I immediately went to the vet and got the meds she needed.

While at the vet’s waiting room, I read about heart worms and how there is no treatment for cats who get heart worm. During my cat’s examination, I was told that perhaps asthma was not the cause of her cough (even though her history indicated she has and was successfully treated for asthma) and they wanted to do x-rays, draw blood, and such to see if she had heart worms. I felt as if I was given a scare tactic in order to agree to expensive diagnostics. After I mentioned that I just read in their waiting room that there is no treatment for heart worms in cats, these x-rays and blood work would be worthless to me. And besides, the pollen count was very high this week and it is affecting asthma suffers. The vet agreed and then backed off. He asked the usual questions about her eating habits and such. I explained that she was an indoor cat and had no contact with other animals.

After the examination, he wanted to give her a rhino…and something or other shot, over a hundred dollars of flea and tick meds, feline leukemia shots and two other shoots. I asked about the rhino…shot and was told that IF a mosquito got into the house and IF it was an infected mosquito and IF it bit her, she COULD get…..I said those are a lot of "ifs" and I was shocked when he said she has probably built up immunity to those things anyway!! "Oh, really, then why did you suggest it", I asked. His eyes darted to the floor. But, he continued…Then he said she should get the leukemia shot. I questioned him and he said leukemia is spread in litters and through saliva. Whelp, my cat is 10 and has no contact with other cats, so not that shot, thank you. He then said she probably does not need it anyway because if she had leukemia from birth, we would know it by now and there is no cure anyway. So then we move onto the flea and tick treatment. My cat has not had a flea or tick treatment, ever. I have NEVER seen a flea in my house or flea dirt on her white belly. The vet told me humans can possibly bring fleas into the house and infect my cat to no end. I told him she has been lucky for ten years, so I will continue taking my chances.

So, through all of this, I am knocking the vet’s "suggestions" down and he knows he is getting no where with me on all of these extras. So, I ask–exactly which vaccinations are required by law. He sheepishly said, well, only one by law, Rabies. I was unaware of that as it was never brought up before. So, I ask how is rabies spread, through mice and rats? He says, no, through larger animals like skunks, raccoons and bats. So, I laugh and say, whelp, I have none of those in my house, so is the shot needed?? Oh yes, he says, you never know when a bat will come into your house! Whelp, I have lived here for 30 years and yes, a bat came down the chimney once. So she got her rabies shot.

I have had cats all of my life and never until now have I received such a hard sell on vaccinations that are not even required by law and worse yet, my cat is at the lowest risk there is to catch any of these diseases. I have only one cat at a time and they are neutered or spayed immediately. With this cat I now have, I have only had reason to go to the vet due to her asthma because she is otherwise a picture of health.

I am shocked at the scare tactics this vet used to try and get me to spend hundreds of dollars on unnecessary shots and treatments for my cat, who’s lifestyle is a very low risk of contacting these diseases. I am not saying that no pets need these shots as that is not the issue here. This is about hard sell for unnecessary shots

So, my question is, are other pet owners experiencing pressure to buy vaccinations that do not fit their pet’s lifestyles? And, Do you think veterinarian medicine is moving more toward business and further away from personal pet care?
this was supposed to be posted in Pets, not birds!!
Tony, I really appreciate your intelligent answer. But, you missed two important points here. The Vet AGREED that my cat did not need all of these extra shots after I asked him to educate me on the risks. He told me she was low risk but he kept on pressing. And, she had a HISTORY of asthma and the same symptoms came about during pollen season. A three day med routine would tell if it was again asthma whereas x-rays and blood work would cost over 0.00 vs. asthma pills .00.

I have been to vets (this vet) with all of my pets and never were all of these shots mentioned prior. Not even last year when I was there.

EDIT: Hey, I am so surprised he did not try to get me to surgically remove the claws on her front paws to protect my furniture. He is slipping!!
My point is that the Vet knew my cat was low risk, particularly after being healthy for ten years straight. And yet he still PUSHED the vacs and afterward he AGREED she did not NEED them. Validating my feeling he was "Hard Selling" me. I think it was just to bring in more money into the office, not because my cat was in need of these vacs, which she clearly is not a high risk.

the skin under her eye will swell w fluid (golf ball size) if it gets 2 this point she will scratch 2 relieve the fluid- which results in infection w antibiotics needed. if im home when it starts swelling i use a needle to relieve the pressure/fluid to reduce the risk of infection. she is a scottie mix, 24lbs. 1 vet told me she was allergic 2 grass (after running blood work). she has also spent a week at VA tech’s vet school where they ran tissue & bone samples, radiographs, x-rays, and went through 4 surgeries- all with no prevail. i dont know what causes her eyes to swell- the mostrecent outbreak was 2 days after switching her to a fish-based formula by merrick. i have also tried switching to a raw diet but that doesnt work either. we tried wellness’ 2 ingredient food only chicken & rice and a muli vitamin- it helps a bit but does not cure. help!!! i love her and does not know what my next step should be!

A friend of mine was told he has Moderate to High levels of Protein in his urine. He went in to the doctor specifically because of the symptom of "Foamy Urine".

He is in generally good health.

✖ He is overweight but not obese.

✖ He has high blood-pressure that is 95% under control.
His doctor gave him a short term prescription for an additional blood pressure medication because it was high when he went in a few days ago and then told him that he would see him in a month to check his symptoms again and do some more blood work.

✖ He has no history of unprotected sex with unknown partners.
He has only had 1 sexual partner in the last few years and that was my aunt that contracted Hepatitis A or B from a blood transfusion back in the late 1990’s.

✖ He has never done any drugs… I don’t think he has even tried Marijuana.

✖ He doesn’t drink alcohol, well, he has about 2 beers or glasses of wine a year.

✖ He has anxiety and depression that he refuses to get treated.

✖ He eats out a lot and knows he eats too much meat.

✖ The doctor ruled out diabetes.

My friend is FREAKING OUT thinking that he has, like, renal failure and I’m trying to get some hard data on Proteinuria.

From what I’ve read, the causes can be anything from just eating too much meat combined with the heat wave all the way to ‘You have AIDS’.

He has been under a lot of stress in general due to his high pressure job and family concerns like paying for college for his two girls, alimony, house payments, the IRS, etc. He has rather severe depression and anxiety but refuses to get that treated because… Well… Because he is male and therefore kinda’ retarded.

The heat has been HORRIBLE for the last week or two and that has hit him hard.

His doctor is a really good doctor (My father goes to him as well) and I keep telling him that if his doctor thought he was about to die from renal failure or a kidney tumor etc. he wouldn’t have been sent home with 30 days worth of extra pills and an appointment for a month from now.

I know I’m going on but I want you to know everything because my friend is REALLY worried and that caused him to not sleep last night and have anxiety today…

ANY advice for him would be greatly appreciated.

I have really high blood pressure.. when I was put on medication it was consistantly around 170/120. I’m 20 years old.. so my doctor thinks it’s strange.. he wanted me to get blood work done but since I have to fast I haven’t found the time to go yet so I haven’t gone back to my doctor and the medication he prescribed for me to use in the mean time finished a couple days ago.. does anyone know of any home remedies that I could use in the meantime until I see my doctor (probably next week)

I was just diagnosed with Addison’s Disease (Adrenal insufficiency) and my biggest problem is that my heart has become rather weak as a result of going undiagnosed for years. I really don’t trust any of my doctors to give me a straight answer so that is why I am asking here. I had a normal echo recently, but my heartbeat and pulses are weak and my blood pressure averages 95/60 ish and getting lower as I have gotten sicker. When they start me on the hydrocortisone and florinef and all that can my heart become strong again?
I was just diagnosed two days ago and they want to do some more test to check for tuberculosis before they give me the treatment. And to answer about my distrust in doctors, well I saw about 50 different doctors since I fell ill and not one of them was able to figure out what was wrong with me until I met my endocrinologist. Over the last year I was misdiagnosed with DEPRESSION, GENERALIZED ANXIETY DISORDER, CONVERSION DISORDER, IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME, MITRAL VALVE PROLAPSE SYNDROME, SOMATIZATION DISORDER, HYPOCHONDRIASIS…….WOW!

That is why I do not trust doctors, because not one of them even considered that I may be experiencing Adrenal failure. This includes 3 hospitalizations this year where "no one can figure out what is wrong" took place. Turns out I was having Addisonian Crisis symptoms all 3 times. They had THREE times to figure it out. My blood work showed: Elevated Potassium and BUN. Lowered Sodium and Chloride. I had a resting heart rate of 120. Smart guys….

I am at 115 over 65 and am experiencing vertigo when changing
from lying down to getting up and vice versa. Blood work shows everything to be near perfect as well as urine analysis. Have read that low blood pressure can effect organs in particular thyroid gland. Recently moved into tent with the following treatment of canvas: 12% decabromodiphenyl oxide, 6% antimony trioxide, .2% 2-n-octyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one. There is a new smell but only the dust is considered toxic during automation. I am 57, drink very little, don’t smoke, but like pot and Don’t like being dizzy. ???

I have had normal blood pressure this whole time. Now, at 40 weeks, I had high blood pressure that my Dr. seemed pretty concerned about. I am doing a 24 hour urine analysis and then having blood work and a non stress test and an ultrasound on friday (i will be 40 weeks, 1 day) what causes high blood pressure in late pregnancy, and what are the effects on both mom and baby?
i forgot to add that my blood pressure today was 188/something! i cant remember the bottom number…….
