Blood pressure should be 120/70 mm Hg or lower in an ideal world. Blood pressures are classified as normal if they are 120/70 mm Hg or less. Prehypertensive if they are 140/80 mm Hg. Stage I Hypertensive if they are 160/90 mm Hg and Stage II Hypertensive if they are 180/100 mm Hg. Anything in the prehypertensive stage should be referred to a physician for possible pharmacological treatment or modification through diet and exercise. Blood pressure can be a silent killer causing atherosclerosis and increasing the risk for kidney disease or strokes without any symptoms.
Nothing to do with height or weight. A healthy male should have a blood pressure of 120/80. It used to be thought that it was normal for the first figure to increase with age, but they have now determined this is not true.
I am 55, and my blood pressure has been between 110/70 and 120/80 for the past 35 years.
If the first number is high, this indicates that your heart is having to work very hard to push the blood around your body. If the second number is high, this indicates that there is a lot of pressure left in your blood vessels between heart beats. This continuous pressure can damage the heart and blood vessels, causing various problems.
Diet and exercise typically control blood pressure, though for some people with severe medical conditions, drugs will be necessary.
120/80 is a good rule of thumb.
