What the best way to stop smoking?
I smoke cigarettes (nothing else). I asked my 10 year old what he wanted for Christmas this year and he told me the only thing he really wants is for me to quit (bless his heart). Now, before I go talk to my doctor I just wanted to know what has worked for others who have quit smoking. Also before you blast me for smoking in the first place, yes I was a stupid 16 year old who wanted to look "cool" but got hooked, and no I’m not proud of it. And no, I don’t smoke around my kids either, I smoke out side.
And yes this is a serious question and yes I know it’s in the wrong section, but the M&D people are the only ones I would actually listen to for advice.

WTF Shake?? An actual question?? WOW!
Dude, I went cold turkey 2 years ago and never went back. It’s all about will power. All my friends took a poll and bet on how long it would take for me to break down. They all lost. HA! The first 2-4 days cold turkey is the hardest. If you make it to a week, don’t cave in on temptation. Once the nicotine start leaving your body it get a little easier. To this day I still want one, especially when I drink. My main helper in quiting was going to the gym or running. Find something you can do that wil keep your mind pre-occupied.Kids, gym, etc.. Cold turkey is the hardest way to go. I personally do not suggest cutting down. I have yet to see this work for anyone. Good luck bro!
When you find out, let me know! Well, a while back (like 6 months ago) I asked my doctor if she had any suggestions, and she prescribed me 150 mg of well-butrin. It’s a not so harsh anti depressant, and one of the side effects of it is quitting smoking. Seriously, people taking it just stop and lose weight too. (miracle pill?) I did not quit smoking…however when I didn’t smoke for a long period of time I didn’t have the urge to go on a rampage and kill anyone near me. So I probably could quit if I decided to…But it Did even out my moodiness! I love my well-butrin! Try it.
I honestly don’t know what advice to give. I certainly would consult with a doctor and find out what recommendations he/she has, but most of my addictions I refuse to quit.
I had a small battle with beer, but it was easy enough. My 6 year old came home and said, "Dad, my teacher says beer is a drug. Why do you do drugs?" I fackin hate that teacher, but decided I didn’t want my kid growing up thinking that "drugs" were something dad did.
Will power will certainly be your best ally… Good luck!
(And don’t tell anyone that I was sincere…okay?)
the easiest way to stop smoking is to start dipping, give Copenhagen a shot and its stronger than cigarettes!
My mom did the Chantix deal and it worked reallly well for her. She did have one slight side effect though, she said it did give her some really weird nightmares. She hasnt smoked in almost 2 years.
Good Luck, its not easy but it will be the best move you ever make.
We are all rooting for you = D
I don’t have any great ideas on how to quit, but think it’s absolutely great that you’re trying to quite for your kid. Kudos Shakey, Kudos.
Man, I have no idea. Obviously nothing has worked great for me, otherwise I wouldn’t have kept picking it up again. The times that have been the easiest for me have been when I have started running (I don’t run!) or some other intense work put program which reminds me of how great my lungs are.
Good luck!!! You can figure this out!! (By the way, you have one smart kid!!)
If you have the power to not smoke around your kids and only outside then you can control you. You just don’t want to control it. I smoked and the day I found out I was pregnant I quit. All in the head. Sure there were days I wanted to have one but I made the choice not to do it. You can ask a doctor for medication to assist you and it does work. Have more rules. Don’t allow yourself to smoke in the house, in the car etc. Only sit in non-smoking sections and stay away from the smokey bars for a while until you can control it while drinking. Good luck.
I don’t know what would work best for you. My brother quit cold turkey – he started smoking at 15 and smoked until he was 32. He quit about a year ago, just threw away his pack of cigarettes, and that was it. (He quit drinking, too… Not that he was a drunk, but he did drink beer a few times a week.) I’m not sure if it’s a method that would work for you – you can always try.
I used to smoke like a freight train. I quit when I was pregnant with my kids and then after the second one I picked up again occasionally. I eventually just quit and I’m not exactly sure how. I think part of it was that my husband doesn’t smoke so there wasn’t an influence around me plus I live in the SW desert and in the summer in 120 degree weather it’s not that enjoyable to go outside and inhale smoke. I think you need to find something else to replace that with. Like chewing gum or something…and those smoke breaks that you take at home or work, still take the breaks but do something else with the time…take a walk or something. Hell I don’t know…get pregnant…that’s what helped me.
I smoked from the age of 13 to 27. I quit dozens of times using all kinds of methods. The last time I quit was a few years ago when I quit cold turkey. I haven’t touched a cigarette since. People who quit and do so successfully quit cold turkey. Everyone I know who tries gum, patch, pills, etc. all struggle with it. I see no point in investing money in the habit. If you really want to quit, you must do it for yourself. Just quit. You will always have the urge. After a while you will forget all about it. Then one day you will get the urge out of the blue. That’s just how it goes. When you are ready, you will quit.
Quit on 4/29/07 at the age of 33 (smoked 13 years)
I never smoked during the day while at work, but after work was my smoking time, also smoked when I drank.
I quit Cold Turkey, would come home, eat dinner and go to sleep everynight at 7:00 for two weeks (cried myself to sleep), played Sims (or someother computer games) to keep me busy, ate sugar free frozen fudgesicles, raisins, nuts, and drank LOTS of water, NO ALCOHOL….and would not step into a bar or anywhere else that allowed smoking for over a year….if anyone I knew that smoked came to my house, I would not allow them to smoke in front of me.
Now I am smoke free, 40 lbs lighter and have started running mini marathons.
