What’s the best way to stop smoking?
I smoke about a pack a day and I know I need to quit. I want to quit, I’m tired of feeding my habit and it’s getting more and more expensive. I’ve tried to quit a few times in the past and failed. For those of you who have successfully stopped smoking, how did you do it? How do you stay smoke-free? What are your tips and suggestions on the first step in the process?
Thanks in advance for your help.
Monica, you hit on my biggest problem, boredom. I smoke most when I’m bored or stressed.
Thanks to the people who offered real answers.
If it were as easy as just not smoking, I’d have done it by now. I hope you guys don’t work with the public.
Which part of "I’m trying to quit smoking" can be taken as please preach to me? I realize this isn’t a medical help line, but for the love of Pete, leave your preaching out of questions like this one. It has nothing to do with religion. Just so you know, I’ve asked Yahoo to remove your sermon.
Well pardon the holy hell out of me for not wanting a sermon in response to a question that doesn’t require one. This is not a religious issue, it’s a health issue. I keep my religion and my health separate. I also don’t like people following me around Yahoo preaching to me.

I used the patch to take the edge off. It doesn’t make it easy mind you- just takes off the edge. Then I split up with my wife, moved into a new apartment, threw away all my old clothes, fabreezed my furniture, and got a new job.
After all that, I still get the urge to smoke sometimes. I was nearly 2 packs a day before I quit. Now, I’m a non smoker.
That’s really the secret. Not ’stop smoking’ or ‘quit’- you need to stop ‘being a smoker’ and become a ‘non-smoker’. The difference is unmistakable. You need to change your lifelstyle- not just kick a habit.
Do it like me….COLD TURKEY!
After two weeks the cravings will go away…..you might get the DT’s like I did those initial couple of weeks….but I’m fine now….never felt better!
Here’s a novel idea. The next time you get the urge to light up, don’t.
don`t smoke
If i were you..i would get a new hobby instead of boredom..if you are bored..then you are gonig to have more of a craving to smoke..and also get nicotine patches, gum, and dont even think about smoking!
Use something as a substitute for smoking

Well, Don’t take this as me preaching to you but I am simply just telling you how I went about it.
At the age of twenty nine I asked the lord to come into my life and help me rid this addiction I had with nicotine and the lord did not answer right away but something miraculous happened to me a few days later when I came out of the bathroom the lord spoke to me with instructions for me to kneel down and close my eyes and do not look up so I obeyed and after I did I felt the lord’s hand touch my head and the lord spoke again and said arise my son you are cleansed.
everytime I tell this I get so happy and humble that even now I feel like crying because the lord has done so much for me when I have done little or nothing to deserve his blessings on me.
Since then, not only have I quit smoking but I have also quit drinking along with everything else that I use to do when I was out in sin.
what was he supposed to say?
"Somehow, I stopped smoking suddenly. I can’t tell you how, but it happened suddenly and I hope that helps"
He told you how he quit…you seem to be very opposed to the God you don’t believe exists. I hate zryphclings…they don’t exist, but I can’t stand them (doesn’t quite make sense)
OMFG… He started off by asking you not to take it as preaching, then he told you what worked for him. He wasn’t trying to convert you. Why don’t you simply accept his answer as one that won’t work for you and leave it alone?
You want to stop smoking? Just stop, cold turkey. That’s what I did. There are cravings, there is irritation at other people. You just accept it and deal with it. Or you light up again. It is a personal decision to make and live with. If you ask the general public for advice, you must expect to get a lot of different answers, some of which will reflect the answerer’s religious beliefs. You accept it and deal with it, or you go consult a doctor about the nicotine patch and lay off asking Yahoo Answers, because some of these answers will not be what you want to hear.
